Winchester

The Winchester Model 70, introduced in the Thirties is another Mauser 1898-inspired gun. Unlike the Remington, it is very similar to the original mechanically. Two front locking lugs, a massive claw extractor and a three-position telescopic-sight friendly wing safety are part of the well-proven package. Winchester dropped the controlled feed/claw extractor on some guns (and you may therefore hear some Model 70s being described as “pre-64” type – the controlled feed version – or not) and got much criticised. The gun is now back in production in its old pre-64 form with a few improvements. Both Featherweight (lightweight, wooden stocked) and Composite (plastic) Hunters are being imported. My choice would probably be the latter in standard .243 or .308 but these guns are also candidates for restocking. Costs from £650. Call BWM Arms on 01235 514550.
