Loro Piana claimed the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup of the British Open Polo Championship 2008 at Cowdray Park on 20 July.
The team, consisting of David Stirling, Alfio Marchini (or Mankini, as the commentator preferred), Juan Martin Nero and Jamie Peel fought off a determined Ellerston (Max Routledge, Gonzalito and Facundo Pieres and Tom Barrack) to claim an 11-10 victory. This score must have made the win all the sweeter for Loro Piana, since it lost 11-10 last year in the Gold Cup to Lechuza Caracas.
The Gold Cup trophy was launched in 1956 by the current Viscount Cowdrays father, and the tournament is now one of the most prestigious and significant fixtures in the sporting calendar, not to mention the social one. Polo totty Jodie Kidd and Henry Brett relaxed in the sun with champagne while the England player Malcolm Borwick was spotted sipping on lime cordial ahead of his big match against Australia in the Cartier International at Guards on 27 July.
